In Brazil for World Cup, English Tourist Gets Hit by Motorcyclist

English tourist who came to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup was hit by a motorcycle while crossing a road at night in Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais. The motorcyclist fled the accident scene.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Bahia Street with Contorno Avenue in the Lourdes neighborhood, south-central region of Belo Horizonte. 25 year old Mark Fischer had just left the hotel, which is only a few meters away, and decided to illegally cross the road. He was taken to an emergency clinic with a broken arm, and cuts on the head, face and mouth. He is said to be in stable condition but remains in the hospital for further observation.

According to the Civil Police delegate Ramon Sandoli, even though the accident was not the motorcyclist’s fault, it was his responsibility to stop and provide assistance to the injured pedestrian. Police have the motorcycle parts and other information that may lead them to identification. The delegate said he hoped the motorcyclist would voluntarily turn himself in.

Brazil has been stingy with the “happenings” due to $900 million invested into security forces that make the World Cup “one of the most protected sports events in history“.
