Sometimes strange coincidences happen at the least expected moments. This past Wednesday the 14th of May, a 23 year old man by the name of Mário David Bezerra dos Santos (nickname Cacá which, without the accent, means shit), was standing in front of his house in Toritama, Pernambuco – Brazil, when the power supply in the whole street suddenly went out, and a few seconds later several shots were heard, according to his wife who was inside the house with their one month old daughter. When she went outside to see what had happened she found her husband dead on the ground.
She claimed she saw no vehicle or people outside, and the darkness caused by the blackout didn’t help.
Police claim Cacá, who was an ex-con, was shot six times, in the head, face, thighs, arms and one even hit his crotch. The investigation to find the murderer(s) is still ongoing.
However, being faithful to the Brazilian tradition of flip-flopping, Cacá made sure he fell near his beloved flip-flop. One last goodbye had to be assured.
According to “official” statistics, this is the 47th murder in Caruaru since the beginning of the year, which I honestly find it hard to believe (the number is much higher than that in my opinion). But with the upcoming World Cup, scaring tourists with the real homicide numbers isn’t really a good strategy.
